We have finally started our yearly Independent Studies and our Science Projects. We have some extremely interesting topics. We have only just started really working on these, so we are not very far through on these projects. These projects will be lasting for a long time, as they are yearly long term projects. The Middle School I.S.’s and S.P.’s have begun!!!

The Middle School is currently involved in two group projects: one studying Ancient African Civilizations, and the other studying Vikings. Daisy, Samrawit, and Kati (me), who are studying Ancient Africa, are creating a map showing the Ancient African Civilizations, complete with paragraphs about some of the more important ones in African History. Alana, Rowie, Hawke, Carter, Aidan, and Matthew are studying Vikings. They are doing various projects, including a map, an educational game, and various research on topics such as weapons, religion, and other interesting things like that.

The most advanced French group “The Sages” or “Les Sages” are starting a series of Japanese classes with Aubrey, one of our current student interns from Bennington College. These classes are taking place on Thursdays during what would be French class for the Sages. We had our first class today, and had a great time.

Alana was just proven not guilty of all charges. The courtroom was a battlefield, and the trial a duel long battled, but in the end, the ruling of the jury was final. Samrawit and I were able to prove her not guilty… even though Alana did perform the crime.

Today is the day of the trial. Both the prosecution and the defense are probably a bit nervous. The verdict is not set in stone, and it is anyone’s game. You will remain posted.

In rememberance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, we have no school today. We all have done or are going to do tomorrow a short study on MLK, and the Middle Schoolers read his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. It is important to remember how Martin Luther King Jr. changed the black people’s entire future so much for the better. Look at where we are now!

In December in the town of Maple Ridge, Alana was arrested by Officer Aidan for animal abuse and vandalism after signs were found protesting against taxes in Maple Ridge! Evidence points to Alana as having trained her pet monkey, Madame Singe, to hang these signs in the night. Alana’s trial is coming up, with the Elementary Groupers as the Jury and the Honorable Ken (Kati’s dad) as Judge. Matthew and Samrawit are serving as Alana’s Lawyers. Testifying in Alana’s defence are Carter, a professional animal psychologist; Hawke, a friend of Alana’s; and Alana herself, testifying for her own innocence. On the prosecution team are Lawyers Katianna and Daisy, Police Officer Aidan, and Animal Control Officer Rowie. We are looking forward to seeing how this trial turns out!

My name is Zoe, and I graduated from Hiland Hall two years ago. I was looking at the Hiland Hall website and reading the blogs, so I thought that I would see if I could still access my account. Is it okay if graduates continue to post on the blog once in a while?

I would like to mention that I came to see Open House and it was great! Everyone did a fantastic job!

By the way, if you weren’t able to attend this year’s open house, it was great! Students performed poems by memory, and did a great job on them. A few students also performed songs on the guitar instead of performing a poem. The whole thing went great, and I think everyone would agree. I don’t know about everyone everyone else, but I know I’m always amazed at how people’s position in the line change from year to year. I remember being second from the end of the line on the big blocks side, and now I am in the last few at the other end! It’s great to watch people grow.

Due to the big snowstorm we had, school was canceled for Monday, January 4th. Even after the big winter break we had was over, everyone got to hang around another day! I hope everyone enjoyed the extra vacation time and played a lot in the snow : ) Play in it while it lasts! Good snow doesn’t last forever, you know.
